English at Mapledene is led by Mrs Robinson, who also teaches Rowan class.

English is taught through the National Curriculum, ensuring pupils develop the key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing as they progress through school. We use a structured approach to support every stage of learning, including Read Write Inc. to deliver high-quality phonics in the early years and Key Stage 1. As pupils become more confident readers, Fluency Shed is used to develop reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary through guided reading sessions, while Spelling Shed is used across the school to teach and reinforce spelling patterns, helping children to build confidence and accuracy in their writing. Reading and writing are closely intertwined throughout our curriculum, giving English a meaningful purpose and providing rich opportunities to deepen learning, broaden children's experiences and inspire a love of language.
