Maths
Our mathematical principles!
At Mapledene, we are dedicated to fostering a positive, inclusive, and ambitious mathematical learning environment, grounded in our core values:
Safety, Commitment, Aspirations.
A foundation of mutual respect and emotional security allows our children to approach mathematics with confidence and curiosity. Our maths lessons are a safe and cohesive space where everyone feels secure, empowered, and ready to engage with mathematical challenges.
We collaborate closely with parents, carers, and external experts to provide tailored support for each child, regardless of their mathematical ability or individual needs. This collaborative approach ensures every child is given the resources and opportunities to excel.
Our mathematics curriculum is designed to engage and meet the needs of all learners. We foster independence, critical thinking, and a love for learning, preparing children to become lifelong learners and problem solvers!
Every child has full access to the National Curriculum for Mathematics, including the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Personalised support and enrichment opportunities ensure that all children can reach their full potential in mathematics.
We champion a Growth Mindset in mathematics, teaching children that effort, commitment, and learning from mistakes are integral to mastering mathematical concepts. Achievements are celebrated at every step, and children are empowered to take ownership of their mathematical learning journey.
At the heart of our mastery approach is the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach. Research shows that when children are introduced to a new concept, working with concrete physical resources and pictorial representations leads to a better understanding of abstract concepts. We use CPA throughout our maths curriculum.
At Mapledene, we believe every child can succeed in mathematics. Our high expectations inspire students to develop the confidence, problem-solving skills, and aspirations they need to thrive in school and beyond.
Our ethos is reflected in our school motto:
BELONG, BELIEVE, BE YOU; ACHIEVE!
HOW TO HELP AT HOME!
In school, we use White Rose resources in our maths lessons.
White Rose Maths have teamed up with TV presenter, teacher and parent Michael Underwood to bring you a mini-series called Maths with Michael. We understand that many parents feel like maths has changed and can sometimes find it difficult to keep up to date with modern teaching methods in maths.
These episodes will give you an introduction to place value, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and algebra. Now sit back and enjoy!

Our calculation policy follows White Rose Maths!
At Mapledene, we recognise the importance of children building upon their prior mathematical knowledge in order to progress confidently. It is crucial that pupils retain and regularly revisit the fundamental skills they acquired in earlier years, as these form the foundation for more advanced learning.
Regular practice of key maths skills greatly enhances accuracy, confidence, and speed of recall. To support this, there are a wide range of high-quality online resources available.
Below is a selection of recommended websites that your child may find both engaging and beneficial in reinforcing these essential skills.
