Friday 26th June
Good morning Cherry!
Today is another hot, sunny day. Please keep safe at home and see your home learning below. Mr Collett and I are looking forward to seeing you all again in school on Monday morning, back ready to learn!
Grammar
Become a grammar detective solving each of the grammar challenges below. Use all your learning from this year to help you.

Reading
Read through the text below about the water cycle and have a go at answering the questions.

Use your knowledge of the four main operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to help you answer these arithmetic questions. Some you may be able to do mentally, others you may need to use a written method. Can you get them all correct?

Geography
River pollution is a major issue affecting rivers all over the world including here in the UK.
Watch this video all about river pollution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EvDSVAlqg0
Then, research the following areas to complete the poster on river pollution.

PSHE/Art
This afternoon, we would like you to have the opportunity to be reflective about what makes each of you unique and amazing. Finish the sentences on each balloon and then colour it in.

You can also get your adult to send a photo of you reading in the shade or any other cool spaces to advice@mapledeneschool.com

Wednesday 24th June 2026
Good morning Cherry!

Because of today’s heat, we’d like you to have a go at some home learning. Below you will find some activities we would like you to do.
Writing
Have a look at the website all about ‘relative clauses’. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zsrt4qt#zxxdb7h
Using your knowledge of relative clauses from the website and our in school learning, please write 6 sentences, which include relative clauses about the image below.

Reading
Read through the diary entry below and have a go at answering the questions attached.

Maths
Following on from our learning yesterday, have a look at this website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zxkydnb/articles/z63qdp3#z2rp8p3
Have a go at converting the units of measurement below. Remember, ‘kilo-‘ means one thousand.
When converting from kg to g or km to m you need to multiply by 1,000.
When you convert from g to kg and m to km you need to divide by 1,000.
4kg = __________ g 5km = _____________ m
2.5kg = ________ g 6.5km = ____________ m
16.23kg = ________ g 12.8km = ____________ m
3,000g = ___________ kg 2,000 m = _____________ km
6,250g = ___________ kg 1,562 m = ____________ km
11,420g = ____________ kg 18,600m = ____________ km
Art
Have a look at this website about landscape artwork. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zhjmnk7/articles/zrnb9ty#z24n3qt
Being inspired by Monet, have a go at recreating this piece of his artwork. Just like we have in Art lessons, have a go at sketching the landscape. If you want to add colour you can, but you can also just do a black and white sketch.

Geography
Choose one of the rivers that we have been learning about around the world.
Please research one of them and write down 6 facts about the river you have chosen.
You can choose from:
- River Nile
- Mississippi River
- Murray-Darling River
- Onyx River
- Amazon River
Who works in Cherry?
Miss Cook is the class teacher.
Mr Collett is the teacher in Cedar.
Mrs Aqib supports Year 5 in the afternoons.
Year 5 Meet and Greet
Please look through the PowerPoint Presentation from our Meet and Greet session to find out more about Year 5.
Timetable
Please see below the timetable for Cherry.
Please note PE lessons will take place on a Tuesday, so the children need their PE kit in school on this day.
Also, our library day will be on a Wednesday, every other week. This will be the children’s opportunity to go and change their library book in the brand-new school library.

Uniform Expectations
It is important that the children come to school in the correct uniform. Please see our school uniform policy to check whether your child has the right school uniform. PE kit also needs to be correct. If the children forget their PE kit, they will be given some from in school to change into.

For the full uniform policy please see here: https://www.mapledene.bham.sch.uk/policies/
Homework
In Year 5, Homework will be set on a Friday. This will include a Maths task linked to the learning we have done in school, an English task and some spellings. These tasks will be in a yellow ‘homework’ book.
Homework is due back in on the following Friday and spellings will be tested through dictation on a Friday morning.
If homework is not completed, the children will be kept in at lunchtime to complete the tasks.
If you have any questions about homework, please speak to the class teacher.
Reading Records
Reading is an important skill and the children should be reading for at least 10 minutes every day.

Every child in Cherry has a reading record and a reading book. This should be in school every day and be taken at home at the end of every day so that you can read with your child at home. Please record in your child’s reading record when they have read at home so we can keep a record of their reading. These will be checked regularly by the class teacher. Don’t forget – they can read books from home too, not just the books provided by school!

Year 4 & 5 Residential Trip
We are all really looking forward to the Year 4 & 5 residential trip to Culmington Manor in February 2026.
If you were unable to make the parent meeting, please see the presentation shared below.
If you have any questions, please ask your child's class teacher.
