British Values
At Mapledene we promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the Rule of Law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance through our curriculum.
Democracy:
At Mapledene, we are committed to fostering a strong culture of democracy, empowering children to have their voices heard and valued.
The School Council serves as a platform for active participation, where children can contribute to decision-making and represent their peers. Elections for School Councillors, as well as the Chair, Deputy Chair, Treasurer and Secretary roles, are conducted through a transparent process of children voting, ensuring fairness and inclusivity.
In addition, our House Captains are also elected in a democratic process by the children in KS2. House Captains represent the children in each house during assemblies, when the house points winner for that week is announced. They also lead key sporting events, such as Sports Day.
Beyond this, children are encouraged to express their opinions openly both in and out of class and during assemblies. Children are also empowered to address and challenge perceived injustices in a respectful and peaceful manner with the support of their class teachers and our Pastoral Team. This approach nurtures confident, thoughtful individuals who are prepared to engage positively in their communities.
The Rule of Law:
Children are taught to understand not only the purpose of laws but also their role in safeguarding individuals and communities. They explore the responsibilities that come with abiding by laws and the consequences of breaking them. This foundation is enriched through engaging activities, particularly during 'Parliament Week,' where children learn the principles of governance, democracy, and the Rule of Law. This allows children to develop a comprehensive appreciation of their role as responsible citizens, in class, at school and in the wider world. The Rule of Law is further promoted by visits from our local Police Officers and PCSOs.
Individual Liberty:
At Mapledene, clear boundaries and guidance empower children to make confident and responsible choices and decisions. Through PSHE and our wider curriculum, they develop the knowledge and skills needed to navigate choices thoughtfully and effectively whilst learning about their rights and personal freedoms.
Our strong anti-bullying culture, reinforced by the consistent application of our Behaviour Policy, fosters accountability and respect, helping children to take ownership of their actions. Central to Mapledene's ethos is our commitment to encouraging every child to embrace their individuality and be themselves as exemplified by our motto 'Belong, Believe, Be You, ACHEIVE!'
This philosophy ensures all children feel valued, supported, and empowered to make meaningful contributions to the Mapledene community and the wider world.
Mutual Respect:
We actively encourage children to cultivate cooperation and have a profound respect for one another's cultures, faiths, opinions, and values. Through our inclusive approach, children learn to work collaboratively, offering each other support while celebrating the uniqueness of every individual. They are taught to appreciate that everyone, regardless of differences or needs, brings valuable contributions to their community. This ethos is carefully integrated throughout our curriculum and consistently reinforced by our Behaviour Policy, creating a foundation for empathy, understanding, and unity in all aspects of school life.
Tolerance:
At Mapledene, our curriculum is designed to help children understand their place in the world and embrace the rich diversity within it. We actively promote tolerance and harmony by encouraging pupils to develop an appreciation for and respect toward both their own cultural heritage and the traditions of others. This is further enriched through meaningful experiences such as visits to local places of worship and the celebration of various religious and cultural events. These opportunities provide pupils with a deeper understanding of the wider community, fostering empathy, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging in a multicultural society.
