World Book Week – Door 5
Today we are going through the final door for World Book Week. Where do you think we are going today?
Check out today’s door below:
Can you guess the book or author? Do you know any characters from the book? Have you read the book?
Check back here at 2pm to hear part of the story. Who will be reading it today?
Maths:
Miss Johnson & Miss Cook’s Group:
Today we are continuing to look at division.
Watch this video first:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks1-maths-division-with-mighty-red/zrh9scw
In yesterday’s lesson, we looked at dividing when we know one of the times tables in the questions. Have a look at the questions below. Which ones could you confidently answer and why?
15 ÷ 5 =
21 ÷ 7 =
16 ÷ 8 =
32 ÷ 2 =
15 ÷ 3 =
How would you answer the questions that you weren’t confident with? Watch Miss Johnson’s video to recap the strategies and then have a go at the tasks.
Mrs Wells' group:
In our maths learning today, we are thinking about how you can represent numbers in words.
Can you match the words below to the correct number?
1 |
eight |
10 |
one |
3 |
ten |
8 |
three |
Watch this video first:
Once you have watched the video, that you may want to watch more than once. Have a go at completing the worksheet to match the numbers 1-20 to their words.
Reading:
Miss Johnson & Miss Cook’s Group:
Head to the Read Write Inc YouTube Channel (click the link below) to watch today's sound videos. Watch the Set 3 Speed Sounds session with Rosie and then scroll down to watch the Reading Longer Words with Rosie video for today's sound. Remember to join in by writing the words on a piece of paper.
Today we are carrying on with our poem but we are looking at inference questions. Re-read the poem and get your thinking hats ready!
Mrs Wells and Miss Sanders’ group:
Head to the Read Write Inc YouTube Channel (click the link below) to watch today's sound videos. Watch the Set 3 Speed Sounds session with Rosie and then watch the Set 3 Spelling video with Rosie video for today's sound. Remember to join in by writing the words on a piece of paper.
Today our text is called ‘Free Snot Broth’ and it sounds disgusting! What is a broth? Well done if you knew it was a type of soup. Do you like soup? Would you like to try snot soup? Read the text and answer the questions.
English:
Miss Johnson & Miss Cook’s Group:
Today in English, we are continuing on with our letters. Remember it is really important that we write the best letter possible so that the most people are persuaded to think more carefully about the rainforest and how they can help stop deforestation.
Firstly, I would like you to re-read the part of the letter you wrote yesterday. Remember reading as we go along (proof reading) and editing our work is really important. While you are reading check for the following things:
-
Have you got capital letters in the correct places?
-
Have you got full stops at the end of each sentence or question marks if you have used a question?
-
Have you got commas after your fronted adverbials?
-
Have you got commas between your adjectives in your expanded noun phrases?
Once you have proof read and checked what you have written so far, watch Miss Johnson’s video about writing your paragraph for reason 3 and your conclusion.
Don’t forget once you have finished your letter, it would be a good idea to proof read your work again using the above check list that you have written today.
Mrs Wells’ Group:
Today, we are going to have a look at some handwriting and some phonics activities. Have a go at the phonics mat below and the handwriting sheets first:
Once you have completed those activities, have a go at writing some sentences about the picture in the writing task. Remember to think carefully about what you need to include in each sentence.
World Book Week – Door 5
Where do you think we are going today? Did you guess from the door?
Have you ever read the book? If you have, what did you prefer the book or the film?
Watch the video below:
Now have a go at designing your own dragon, you can do this as a picture but it would also be brilliant if you could label it and tell us for example, what it eats.
DT:
Today we are finishing off our moving animal rainforest picture. Remember, this is what we want it to look like when we are finished.
You will need:
-
Your white piece of card
-
Your green strip
-
Your split pins
-
Coloured crayons or felt tips
Watch Miss Johnson’s video that talks you through the steps for today’s tasks. I would recommend that you watch all of the video first and then re-watch it and pause it at the parts I say.
ICT:
Today, we are continuing with our learning on coding. Can you remember what it is?
Have a look at the pictures below for making a sandwich, could you give a piece of code (an instruction) for each picture? You don’t need to write this down.
Today, you have a choice of 2 activities. The first is a task from the Hour of Code. The second is a challenge set by Mr Murphy. Choose 1 of these tasks to complete and follow the instructions below.
Option 1: Hour of Code
https://studio.code.org/s/oceans/stage/1/puzzle/1
Option 2: Mr Murphy's Coding Challenge
Have a go at creating your own code to make a shape or character. For this task you will need to go to this website.
https://www.tinkercad.com/
Read through the document below to see the instructions for this week's challenge.
2:45pm Zoom – Wonderful Work Friday
Join us for our last zoom meeting at 2:45pm today to see what we have all been up to this week. If you want to bring some work you are proud of with you, please bring it to share with each other. Alternatively, you can sit and look at what other children have been doing both at home and in school. We cannot wait to see you!

Have a look at the teachers’ costumes to see if that helps.
Who will be reading the story today? Check back here at 2pm to hear part of the story!
Maths:
Miss Johnson & Miss Cook’s Group:
Today in Maths we are looking at division. What happens if I am dividing? How many other ways can you say division?
Watch the video below to recap what you know about division.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/maths-ks1--ks2-the-relationship-between-multiplication-and-division/zdqb47h
We are going to look at division facts for times tables that we are confident with. Which times tables are you confident with? Remember that by the end of Year 3, we should know our 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 8s and 10s and that if you are confident, you should be able to answer the question as soon as I say it.
Have a look at Miss Johnson’s video which explains the task for today’s learning.
Mrs Wells' group:
In Maths, we are going to be looking at numbers that are more than and less than. Have a watch of this video first:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0blsqtz/numberblocks-series-3-blockzilla
Now watch these two videos which helps us to compare numbers and you will see the crocodile in the second video.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z3cm8hv
Now you have watched the videos, can you have a go at using your < and > to compare the numbers on your worksheet.
Reading:
Miss Johnson & Miss Cook’s Group:

Have a watch of Miss Johnson who is going to go over the WAGOLL so we can remember what we want to include and show you the start of her letter.
Mrs Wells’ Group:
Today we are going to have a go at retelling the story Where the Forest Meets the Sea. Can you remember any of the different things that happen in the story? Who is the story about?
When we are writing sentences, what do we want to see in your writing?
We want to see capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, letters on the line. We will also be looking out for the conjunctions 'and' and 'because' in your writing!
World Book Week:
Have you guessed what today’s book is from the picture of the door and the Year 3 and Year 4 teachers’ costumes?
We also have loved seeing your photos of your costumes, if you haven’t sent them in yet, please do to advice@mapledeneschool.com.
Have a look at Roald Dahl’s website below and enjoy learning not only about his books but him too.

Where do you think we are going today?
Check out today’s door below:
Can you guess the book or author? Do you know any characters from the book? Have you read the book?
Check back here at 2pm today to hear part of this fantastic story!
Maths:
Miss Johnson & Miss Cook’s Group:
Today, we are looking at recalling the 4 times tables and the thinking about how you may apply these to the 8s. If you know your 4s really confidently, you will already know some of your 8s.
Have a watch of the 8s Super Movers video below to get you ready for your learning:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks2-maths-the-8-times-table-with-filbert-fox/z4mrhbk
How many of your 8s did you know already? Did you spot any numbers that are multiples (in the) of 4s and are in the 8s?
Now watch the video about the 4s before completing your work for today.
Mrs Wells' group:
Today we are going to be looking at numbers and how we can represent them in different ways. Represent just means to show the numbers. We already have looked at home to show 2-digit numbers using tens and units.
For examples, we could show 35 as...
Now let’s watch the video to see how else we can represent numbers.
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/representing-2-digit-numbers-part-1-6dhkgd?step=2&activity=video
Once you have watched the video, have a look at your task for today.
Reading:
Miss Johnson & Miss Cook’s Group:

Today, we have a new part of Rainforest Calling to look at and then are going to answer the skim and scan and inference questions about the new piece of text. What do you think is going to happen today? How do you predict Daisy is feeling at the moment and why?
Mrs Wells and Miss Sanders’ group:
Head to the Read Write Inc YouTube Channel (click the link below) to watch today's sound videos. Watch the Set 3 Speed Sounds session with Rosie and then watch the Set 3 Spelling video with Rosie video for today's sound. Remember to join in by writing the words on a piece of paper.
In today’s lesson, I would like you to think carefully about the poem we have been looking at this week. Can you remember what the poem is about? Firstly, I would like you to re-read the poem. Once you have read it, you are then going to have a go at the matching the words from the poem to what they mean.
English:
Miss Johnson & Miss Cook’s Group:
In English today, we are looking at paragraphs. What is a paragraph? Have a watch of the video below to help you start to understand?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/z9n73k7
You see paragraphs all around you, when reading stories, information texts and much more. Our WAGOLL was also in paragraphs.
Have a look at the sheet below. For the first task, say what the paragraph is about. Then, separate the chunk of text into paragraphs. The final task will involve you planning the paragraphs for your letter that you will be writing tomorrow.
Mrs Wells’ Group:
When we are writing a perfect sentence what do we need to include?
Well done if you said:
-
Capital letters
-
Full stops
-
Finger spaces
-
Fred Fingers to spell the words
-
Check it makes sense
-
Which sentence below is perfect and why?
The boy and his father got on the brown boat to the island.
The boyand his father goot on th brown bot to the island
Today Miss Johnson needs some help making sure her sentences are perfect. Watch the video below and then help Miss Johnson be completing the worksheet.
11:45am – Zoom – Wellbeing Wednesday:
Join Miss Cook, Miss Johnson, Mrs Wells and Mr Murphy on Zoom today at 11:45am to see what we are doing for the final Wellbeing Wednesday. As always, we cannot wait to see you all!
World Book Week:
Have you guessed where we are going today from the photo of the door?
I wonder who will be reading part of the story at the end of the day. Who do you think?
An amazing thing about books is they are often turned into plays and/or films.
Have a look at the website below and read through the information.
https://www.narnia.com/behind-scenes-lion-witch-wardrobe/
Have a go at one of the activities below:
Look at the picture below from the play when Lucy has just found Narnia for the first time. Can you describe how she is feeling?
Or design and create a ticket for a play of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
DT:
This week in DT we are going to be creating this over two lessons.
Today we are going to be working on the background and then on Friday we will be adding the animal. You will need:
-
A white piece of paper A4 or A3
-
Colouring crayons or felt tips
-
Green paper and brown paper – these are optional
Please note that you will need to save the white card, green strip of paper and split pins for Friday’s lesson.
Watch the video below that explains today’s steps.
Spanish:
This week in Spanish, we are going to be recapping some of the learning we did back in September all about saying hello and introducing ourselves.
Can you remember how to say 'hello' and 'goodbye' in Spanish?
Have a look at the songs below. Can you remember any of these from our previous learning? You may want to join in!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks1--ks2-mfl-spanish-greetings-with-ben-shires/zfksqp3
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zbkjmyc/articles/z4bnpg8

-
Hello
-
How are you?
-
I am... good
-
What is your name?
-
My name is...
-
Goodbye
Today we would like you to write a story in the style of a comic strip. The speech must be in Spanish. You may want to use the comic strip template below to set it out. See Miss Cook's example below:

Maths:
Miss Johnson & Miss Cook’s Group:
In Math’s today we are going to be looking specifically at the 3 times tables. Watch our Super Movers video to get your brain ready to learn:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks2-maths-the-3-times-table/z6sw382
Have a watch of the video below and then once you have watched it, have a go at completing Mr Murphy’s sheet. There may be some representations on the sheet that weren’t in the video, but you will have seen before, can you challenge yourself to answer the questions?
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/recalling-the-3-times-table-c8tp4d?step=1&activity=video
Once you have finished your sheets, you may want to play hit the button. Remember to click on times tables and then 3s. How many can you get in the time? Keep practising and see if you can beat your score.
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
Mrs Wells' group:
Yesterday in Maths, we were ordering numbers from 50-100. To start today’s lesson, challenge yourself to see how quickly you can write down all of the number from 50-100 in order. You can time yourself using the link below:
https://www.online-stopwatch.com
Today, we are going to be counting on from a number. Watch Miss Johnson’s video and then have a go at completing the work sheet below.
Today are continuing to look at the same part of Rainforest Calling but answering our inference questions. Before re-reading the text, can you remember what happened yesterday?
Make sure you have the text in front of you and have read the text yourself independently. Then have a go at joining in with Miss Johnson’s jump in video before answering the ‘thinking hat’ questions.
Yesterday we looked at a poem about a dinosaur, which we are going to continue to look at today. Re-read the poem and then join in with Miss Johnson’s jump in video. Once you have done that, have a go at answering the questions.
English:
Miss Johnson & Miss Cook’s Group:
Today we are looking at clauses in sentences. We are looking at major (main) clauses and subordinate clauses. You use these in your writing all the time, but may not have heard the terms before. Watch the first short video that can be found on the webpage below:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zgds6g8
Once you have watched that video, watch the following video:
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-explore-complex-sentences-60t66c?step=1&activity=video
Now let’s apply our learning of main and subordinate clauses to sentences about deforestation by having a go at Miss Johnson’s activities on the sheets.
Mrs Wells’ Group:
Can you remember what the story was called that we looked at yesterday? Can you remember any of the key things that happened in the story? Re-watch Miss Johnson reading the story.
Today, we are going to think carefully about writing sentences about different parts of the story. We are going to use our colour semantics to help us build different sentences.
Think about:
-
Who is in the story?
-
What different things to do they do?
-
Where do they do them?
Now watch Miss Johnson’s video and help her come up with some sentences. Then have a go at completing the sheet to come up with your own.
World Book Week – Door 2:
Have you guessed which world we are going to today?
Watch the video below of the iconic map that is featured in the books.
Maybe you want to draw your own map of the forest like I have done below and come up with your own names and ideas.
Once you have had a go at drawing your own map, watch the video below and enjoy part of the book. Miss Smith will also be reading part of a Winnie the Pooh story which will be available from 2pm underneath the photograph of the door above.
Science: Zoom Introduction at 1:15pm
Join our Zoom at 1:15 to find out about today’s Science learning. If not, read the information below and watch the videos.
Can you remember the Science words we looked at last week about skeletons?
Well done if you said invertebrates and vertebrates. What is the different between them and can you think of any examples of vertebrates and invertebrates? What are humans?
Today, we are going to continue to explore skeletons and think carefully about some other Science words that important to use when sorting skeletons.
The words are:
- Endoskeleton
- Excoskeleton
- Hydrostatic Skeleton
Before you watch my video, can you make any predictions about what the words might mean?
Library:
I feel like this library session is extra special because it is World Book Week too. Where do you love to read a book? I love to read books in all sorts of places, sometimes in bed, sometimes on the sofa and when we are allowed to travel, I love to listen to stories through audio books on trains and buses.
I also LOVE to build a den and settle down with a copy of my favourite book.
During this library session, and if it is ok with your adults, we would like you to build a den and then send us a photo of you reading one of your favourite books in your den!
Day 36 – Monday 1st March
This the final week of home learning. Miss Johnson, Miss Cook and Mrs Wells cannot wait to see you all next Monday back at school. Keep being resilient and working hard!

World Book Week – Door 1
This week, we are celebrating World Book Week. Don’t forget that on Thursday, we would love you dress up as your favourite book character. What do you think we will be dressing up as?
Each morning, we will post a picture of a door in school on the school website, with some clues that will take you to a different world. Each day, we would like you to use your detective skills to guess which world and book with me might be looking at.
At the end of each day, a different teacher from Years 3 and 4, will upload part of the story to listen to which can be found on the Year 3 class page.
Check out today’s door below:
Can you guess the book or author?
Check back at 2pm to see Mr Mac reading part of this book.
9am Zoom – Rise and Shine
Join us for our last Zoom rise and shine session. Make sure you are up and ready as we are looking for some volunteers to help us pick our rise and shine videos.
Maths:
Miss Johnson & Miss Cook’s Group:
This week, we are going to be looking at our knowledge of multiplication and times tables. Remember by the end of Year 3, you should confidently know your 1s,2s,5s,10s, 3s, 4s and 8s. Don’t worry if you aren’t there yet, but that is what we are working towards.
Have a quick go at this video to get you in the mood:
