You have done a brilliant job with rounding to 1 million this week. Before you start, play this game to wake your brain up!

https://www.mathnook.com/math/math-dog-rounding-nearest-100.html

Now your brain is warmed up, today we would like you to create your own rounding game based on an alien invasion. It can be a card game, a board game or another game of your choice as long as it practises your rounding skills to a million.

We have included some things that you might like to use, but feel free to create your own. Remember, we are testing our Maths skills here, so spending an hour drawing an alien counter is not good maths! We can’t wait to see your games.

We’ve had lots of messages from you saying how much you have been enjoying the Jazz Harper story. As there are only two videos of it left, we would like you to finish the story. Answering two lots of questions is too much, so rather than writing down the answers to the questions, we would just like you to listen to, and enjoy, the story. Or if you would prefer, finish reading the story yourself.

The Last Human Broadcast

Good afternoon Year 5,

You have made it! It is Friday afternoon 😊  This afternoon you are going to finish this half term’s learning in style.

First of all, we’d like to liven things up with PE, in preparation for the  weekend.  Below are a series of links that you can choose from:

[FORTNITE FITNESS] Batman Dance Workout ft. Glenn Higgins

Among Us P.E. Edition

..

Just Dance 2014 - Ghostbusters (Classic 5 Stars) PS4

Reward Time

Year 5 …. It’s ‘Reward Time’!   You get to choose how to spend this time.  Curl up with a book, snuggle up on the sofa and watch a film, write a story, create a piece of artwork … the decision is yours.

The Jamie Drake Equation

Yesterday, Jamie learnt all about the Fibonacci Sequence of numbers that 'Buzz' was using to communicate with him. Will he be able to communicate any further? Find out in Chapter 15 and 16.

(Video coming shortly)

Before we finish for the holidays, we would like to give you a sneak peak at our topic for next half term...

- YouTube

You have been simply amazing this half term.  We are lucky to be your teachers and we are so proud of you all.  Now it’s time to relax and enjoy your week off – you’ve earned it!

Before we sign out for the half term break we would just like to say a huge, HUGE thank you to our Year Five parents who have been supporting our wonderful children. We know at times that home-learning can feel a little overwhelming, but you have been truly amazing. Whether finding the square root of a number or being up to your eyeballs in glitter and pipe cleaners as you try to recreate the EXACT surface of Mars, you have risen to every challenge - we think that you are all incredible.

For now, it's time for us all to take a well-earned rest. Have a lovely holiday, stay safe, and we look forward to seeing you all for the start of a brand new term.

Love Miss F and Mrs H

Thursday 11th February

Good morning Year 5.

Only two days until you graduate from MASA. Have you completed all of the tasks that need to be done? Make sure that your work is sent to us at advice@mapledeneschool.com.

If we can’t see it, we can’t help you to pass your badge!

This afternoon, we will be finishing off our alien creations, and designing the habitat that they live in. Have a look at these weird and wonderful creations that we have been sent so far!

Amazing work! We can't wait to see everyone's final creations.

Tomorrow afternoon, both classes are going to have their Zoom awards ceremony and an end of term quiz. At this ceremony, you will be awarded your final badges, plus you will find out whether you have got what it takes to graduate from MASA. Please make sure that all of your work is sent to us by no later than tomorrow lunchtime.

So… what other exciting things do we have in store for you today?

Now you have recapped this, play this game (take your time, if you go wrong you have to start all of the levels again!). The more levels you pass, the harder the place value gets (parents, there is an option to turn the sound off on this game!).

Your tasks for Maths today are on Doodle. Some of you also need to complete tasks from Monday’s lesson on rounding to 10, 100 and 1000. Although you don’t send your Doodle work to us, we can see who has completed each task, so please ensure that you get your extras up to date.

English-Drama

Yesterday, you found out that you were the last person alive…or so you think. If you have survived, there must be others like you…terrified and alone…unsure of what their next move should be.

Over the next two days for your English work, we would like you to do some Drama. Record a message to send to any other humans that might be out there. We would like you to focus not only on the words that you are saying, but how you are feeling too. Watch Miss F’s video to see her interpretation.

Good afternoon!

This afternoon, we would like to give you the time to finish off your alien project. On Thursday, we focused on the type of alien you might create. Today, we would like you to think about your planet. What does it look like? What plants live there? Are there any other creatures? Use your creative skills to draw/paint/model your planet, then take a photo of your alien in front of it.

Here are some ideas of what your planet might look like.

Yesterday, we found out that aliens were invading our planet. Today, you are the last person on Earth. When the aliens arrived, you hid in a cupboard in your classroom.

You emerge to…nothingness…

Empty chairs…corridors that echo with silence…desolate playgrounds…not even a bird chirping.

Watch this video, then describe what it’s like being the only person left on Earth. Use the word bank to help you. Remember all of the sentence structures that we have learnt this year, as well as show, don’t tell. For merits, try to use some of the new language that we learnt yesterday.

The Last Human on Earth

We have done your story starter for you.

As I stepped out of the cupboard, the first thing that struck me was the deafening sound of silence…The creak of the wooden door and the rattle of the handle echoed down the lengthy corridor as I stepped out into a strange, eerie world…

Remember, you should try to give your reader a sense of what you can see, and how you feel as you look for other people.

First of all, let’s go wild for all of those children who were in the green across all four areas yesterday. You have all earned yourself a merit and a smelly certificate.

Well done to: Frankie, Jayden, Maisy, Rylan, Dylan, Helen, Jasper and Scarlett.

We know that Doodle wasn’t quite running smoothly yesterday, so are going to have another chance today to get yourself in the green in all four areas.

We have decided that we will present both your Space Explorer, and your Extra-Terrestrial life badges in one presentation on Friday, so please could you make sure that all of your work is with us by then. We also have several children in the running for gold stars of distinction…it could be you!!

In this story, Earth is attacked by strange beings from another planet. Here is the introduction.

In the introduction of the story, there is a lot of incredibly tricky vocab. We would like you to research the meanings of the words highlighted (use the synonyms on the left to help you) in order to help you understand what the text is about. Once you have found out what they mean, choose five of them to create a calligram for. Not sure what a calligram is? Look at the pictures below.

Now do you understand what a calligram is? It’s a way of writing a word so that the way it is written, represents its meaning.

Take the word serene. Miss F has researched the word, and knows that it means calm or peaceful. This is the calligram that she has drawn to help her to remember the word.

Now you understand, choose five of the words and create calligrams for them-you can be as creative as you like, as long as it helps you to remember the word.

Good afternoon Year 5

This week for our Tuesday and Thursday afternoon Art lessons, we would like you to create your own alien and alien planet. Your alien can be cute, fearsome, robotic…let your imagination run wild. You may wish to plan today, then create on Thursday, or create your planet today and alien on Thursday. How you organise your work is up to you. This work goes directly towards your Extra-Terrestrial badge, so make sure that your work is of a high standard.

To get you thinking, here is a picture challenge. How many aliens here can you name?

For your piece of artwork, you can produce your alien in any media. You may wish to make a model, or draw and paint, or use a computer drawing programme. You may wish to make a flipbook cartoon or a stop frame animation. The choice is yours. We look forward to seeing your creations.

To finish today, snuggle up somewhere cosy and listen to Miss F read you the next two chapters of ‘The Jamie Drake Equation’.

Our final mission is the Extra-Terrestrial life badge, where we will be looking at the possibility of life on other planets.

We are going to kick off our week by starting a Doodle challenge - get yourself in the green zone across all four areas, and earn yourself a shout out and the smell of success delivered through your letterbox!

Now you have recapped your understanding, complete your doodle task to consolidate your understanding.

Reading

Last week we met Jazz Harper, an intrepid adventurer who was living in the Marineris Colony on Mars. This week, we will follow Jazz’s adventures as she goes on the hunt for alien life. Like last week, watch the online learning video, answering the questions as you go.

English

This week, as part of our Extra-Terrestrial Life badge, we will be considering the possibility of an alien invasion on Earth. Before we do this, we would like you to find out what humans have done to look for life on other planets. 5F will have their English lesson on Zoom today, so there is a section for each class to access.

Before our Zoom call at 11 o' clock, make sure that you watch this video, and know what the Voyager crafts' aims were, and how scientists have tried to reach out to extra-terrestrial life. We will complete the work together during our lesson. Make sure that you come prepared to write down your ideas – you will need some paper and a pen or pencil.

Today, we would like you to consider what message you would like to send into space to any extra- terrestrial life that might be out there. What would you want to show them about the human species? Before you start thinking, watch this video to find out about the Voyager crafts and their missions.

For your task today, we would like you to decide on ten pictures/sounds that you think we should send to space in 2021. What would represent the human race the best? What would you want alien lifeforms to know about planet Earth? You are only allowed ten choices, so be careful with what you choose. You can either write them in a list, or find the images/sounds and pop them into a presentation for us - we will then make a Year 5 golden record to share.

Music

Hello Year 5!

This week we will finish learning the song 'Bringing Us Together'. First of all, click on the link below to warm up your bodies and voices. Make you sure you have clicked on the tab ‘Move to the Pulse’ and have fun following the actions.

This week we are going to repeat the activity from last week with a different piece of music. Are the shapes and colours in your mind similar or different to your artwork last week? Send your completed artwork in to school using the advice email address and we can show case them in our next zoom session.

Here is some work based on last week’s music-Mars, Bringer of War.
